Risky Beesness
A downloadable game
Introduction:
Designed specifically for the 36-word RPG Game Jam, Risky Bees-ness offers a quick and easy setup to tell collaborative Bee-folk adventures. Choose a type of character, goal, and adversary, and then let the tales begin.
You are a miniature bee-folk hero in this very big world, blessed with great skill for a being so small. Will you hurdle every obstacle to reach your goal and overcome your adversaries?
A game for 1-5 players.
Gameplay Hints:
A 36-word game must be precise and concise at the same time, but if you need a little more help to shape your story here's a short summary of how to implement the rules as written. First off, let each player choose a type. There is no GM required, as you'll be telling the story collaboratively, so be sure each player takes one.
Together, choose a goal to reach and an adversary to face. It's okay if these are vague at first, because the storytelling process may help you to fully define these. You're ready to start. Go around the table, each taking a turn to describe the set up of a scene or the introduction of a set of obstacles (a puzzle, a trap, a fight, a journey - whatever you can imagine!). As the characters face something that needs a dice roll, adjudicate by rolling a six-sided die (d6). If your character should be a bit better at doing this - such as a magical character casting a spell - then add +1 to the roll. Anything over a 3 is considered a success.
Keep going through this process, taking turns to introduce scenes and obstacles, and then role playing and dice rolling to help shape a story. Describe what the successes and failures feel like and how they are going to shape the story going forward.
While these mechanics are very simple, they set you up well for some very creative storytelling. Don't forget, you have a nearly blank canvas to tell stories of these bee-folk. What is their society like? What do they care about? How do they act? You are tiny, with wings and stripes. The rest is up to you... and that's the whole point. Take the base of these ideas, and stretch out your creative mind as far as possible.
I hope you enjoy! Now go bee creative 😉
Safety:
While Risky Bees-ness was designed for whimsical storytelling, one should never forget that situations or topics may arise in any story that make others uncomfortable to the extent that the experience is harmful. Stories involving insects might be an area of gameplay that some are simply not going to enjoy, but in a game of open, collaborative storytelling, there's no way to know what might pop into conversation.
Do bee 🐝 mindful of others and their comfort when sharing such tales. Use established safety tools and open communication before play for the best experiences all around.
